19th May 2207: vs Sanderstead (H) - Winning Draw [x pts]

The ones were put in to bat and Sam H got us off to a good start before eventually being bowled by a very good nut for a well made 60. Donuts, having survived a couple of chances, progressed to 81. However once he was caught during the impressive opening bowler's 2nd spell we folded from 166-2 to 204 all out. A couple of runouts (1 unfortunate, 1 suicidal), did not help. Overall we were too eager to score too many too quickly and paid the price, falling 20 short of what we wanted. It has to be said that their opener showed how difficult it can be to score quickly at TD if you hit a good length with some purpose. He finished with 6-92.

204 is always gettable on our ground so wickets were the key. We could not make significant inroads early, although Monkey and Sam H bowled tightly, and Richie came on to remove an opener. We switched to containing tactics, and Podge removed the other opener with a dart. This proved to be to Sanderstead's advantage as the no 4 was a more dynamic player, and a 70-odd partnership took them to within 55 of victory. Monkey returned to make the vital breakthrough and then took a stunning return catch to trigger a Paulineesque collapse. Chuck had the no 3 caught in the deep for 76, and then 3 wickets fell in his next over - 2 bowled and the 2nd suicidal run out of the game, to leave 16 needed off the last over with 2 wickets remaining. They went for it, and Mike Curtis took a pressure catch running in from long off with 1 ball to go - which they managed to negociate.

A good game and another winning draw. We had to graft for everything we got, and it was a shame that we couldnt press on in the last 5 overs of our innings, otherwise we could have dictated the 2nd half a bit more. [AD]

12th May 2207: vs Byfleet (A) - Winning Draw [8 pts]

It was a good toss to win on a damp pitch at Byfleet and we began well, Chris 'Monkey' Reid and Geoff McNamara restricting the scoring early on. Monkey in particular bowled aggressively and moved the ball at pace to take 3 early wickets. There followed a stubborn partnership for the fourth wicket which we had ample opportunity to break, but as is all too often the case we dropped a number of catches. Chuck bowled well to take 2 at the death and Monkey returned to finish with excellent figures of 20-5-53-6. Nevertheless Byfleet struggled to 165 which was 30-40 more than they should have got.

Their openers bowled well, swinging the ball and not offering much to hit on a wicket that was still sticky. We fell behind the rate and pressure contributed to the steady fall of wickets until it seemed we would have no chance of forcing a result. A couple of bowling changes, though, allowed Charles 'Chuck' Slaughter and Monkey (having a good game) to get some momentum going with some lusty hitting. For a while we were up with a rate that had climbed to over 7, but ultimately we could not get over the line and finished 7 runs short. A disappointing result on a day when no other game ended in a draw. We were much the better side, but we must learn to win these games if we are to hope for promotion this year. [AD]
