Tour Review
We had a good hotel on one of the best beaches in Barbados - Worthing - and within walking distance of the lively nightlife. The weather was hot and dry with a cooling breeze just making it bearable. Howeve, by dint of losing the tossbar one, we fielded first in the heat of the day in every match.
Our first look at the Carlton Club saw our host Desmond Haynes, watering and preparing the track. The wickets were fantastic and contrary to expectations, no balls came above shoulder height. The outfields were brown and rock hardwhich suited the big Barbadian hitters who only seem to play in 35 over matches - and know how to get the scoreboard moving from the first ball.
Seven matches were played. We won two, lost three in the final over, only fell short by two overs in one and were soundly beaten by the Police - Barbados champions but fielding only 4 of their 1st XI. James Poulet, Sam Peters and Chuck Slaughter headed the batting averages whilst Tom Peters, Adrian Lee and Richie Carroll took the most wickets.
Apart from the cricket and clubbing, the tour will be remebered for some rum punches, beach cricket, deep sea fishing, island tours, fish suppers at Oistins, kite flying, tour courts, lounging by the pool, the american Bar across the road and bags of sleeping and swimming in the seas. What a life!
