25th June 2006: vs Leatherhead (A) - Lost by 6 Wkts
The game against Leatherhead was some what disjointed due to the footy. We started early playing a 35 over match and we progressed to 159 for 5 due to 60 not out from Highfield, 35 from Manning and 24 from Dickson. We were planning to watch the game in the oppo's clubhouse, however a gas leak had been reported earlier and the gasman asked us all to stay out of the clubhouse until it was disconnected but all would be complete by 4pm. Regrettably a electrical fault was also found and at about 3.45 all power was cut off! A mass exodus to local pubs then occurred! We started again after the match and although the oppo started badly at 12 for 3 after 8 overs, we were one bowler short and Leatherhead won by 6 wickets with a couple of overs to spare. [NB]
18th June 2006: vs Olinda Vandals - Match Drawn
After a good start against Olinda Vandals, 27 for 3; an interesting not out decision from Tickles against their captain, who went on to make 150 not out, they reached 233 for 5 in 48 overs. Despite a good batting line up and 53 and 43 not out from Dickson and Cato respectively, the target was too large and we finished on 168 for 6. [NB]
11th June 2006: vs Claygate - Lost by 3 Wkts
Despite finding ourselves playing Claygate's 1s on Sunday ( not sure how that happen Tim?) we put on a creditable performance. The oppo had a good bowling attack and we succumbed to 147 all out mainly thanks to 54 from Coxy and a spirited 23 from Tom Dean at the end. With only 10 men and with Cliffy's injury, we were not confident; but with a surprise visit from the Sunday 2s overseas player - Bishop - who took a five- for and some hostile bowling from Deano we took 7 of their wickets in getting to their total. In fact, if we had had the extra player and one or two dubious umpiring decisions had gone our way we might have snatched a win!! [NB]
4th June 2006: vs Chadwick - Won by 68 Runs
We played at the very picturesque ground off West End Lane in Esher against Chadwick. Against some weakish bowling with a smallish boundary, we plundered 271 for 3 in our allotted 40 overs. Graham Skelton, despite having been up all night celebrating his Birthday hit a sparkling 92, accompanied by Dave Highfield with more sedate 65 and finished by Ash with a brutal 71 in very few balls.
The oppo started well and for a time kept pace with the run rate but Cliffy, Ash and Godders quietened proceedings down allowing Skelton to take benefit of some big hitting at the end with 4 for 41; all out for 203.
Some great catching, two in particular from the 'Collingwood Book of Diving Catches' by Irfan Ladak and Matt Connolly. [NB]
28th May 2006: vs Chiswick & Latymer - Match Drawn
Playing Conference side Chiswick and Latymer of ten men, with our team full of batsmen and very limited bowling we needed to bowl first and see what the target was. Lost toss and was inserted! Great start! Shouldn't have worried about the number of batsmen as we were soon 56 for 6 off 28 overs with some very good bowling from the oppo. Despite a rear guard action mainly from Dhelminie and Kennedy (who topped scored with 26) we were all out for 127.
Little chance one felt. But opening the bowling with the spin of Ash Dhelminie ( who bowled through the whole innings) and some excellent swing bowling from Cato and spin from Kennedy the oppo made heavy weather of the chase and we bowled the last three overs needing to get their last wicket for victory. Alas, they held out at 101 for 8. Great bowling from Ash 21.8.44.6 and Tim 14.9.15.1.
May struggle a little for next Sunday so any league players who would like a double outing to get practice please reply to Nick Brooks. [NB]
2005 Season Review
Played 13 Won 5 Drew 5 Lost 3.
I enjoyed my first season as Captain and in many ways we were unlucky not to have won more with the opposition just hanging on for a draw at the close on number of occasions. The one match that will be passed down in the annals of Sunday 2nd legends was the match against Spencer. On one of the hottest days of the year Spencer posted 283 -0, In itself a feat worth noting for the wrong reasons. But what was so amazing was that we made it with 5 wickets and overs to spare thanks to a second consecutive unbeaten century from Charlie Brooks and 80 from Chris Rampling.
The season's stars were the ever youthful Godfrey with some fantastic catches and very tight bowling, the all-round performances with bat and ball from Bishop and the batting of Highfield. However, the Doughty Tankard went to Charlie Brooks, with an average of 63 runs.
Under the management of the Lyons we had a successful and fun August Bank Holiday Tour in Norfolk, against slightly weaker opposition than we would have liked, winning three out of three!
